The Station:
Blenheim brigade’s building profile is predominantly residential with a CBD with mostly light industry to service the rural community and NZ’s largest wine industry. Several major winery complexes are located within the are covered by the Brigade. We also have the Airforce base (Woodbourne) which houses Safe Air – a subdivision of Air NZ.
The town is presently going through a growth phase with the construction industry (both commercial and residential) work at capacity. This can be seen in the increase of number of persons and occupied dwellings, as per the 2006 provisional census results.
Blenheim is also first response to rural fires within its district having the Marlborough District Council tanker housed on site. In addition to use in vegetation fires, this tanker is used for structure fires in outlying areas where there is no reticulated water supply. The water supply is reticulated in the urban area but not in the rural areas or the Satellite urban developments serviced as first response to Blenheim including Grovetown, Spring Creek, Rarangi & Tua Marina. Blenheim are also first response to the Riverlands area and the Cloudy Bay Industrial Park area.
The Brigade offer a “Community working for the Community” programme where the VSO/Fire Risk Officers check, change batteries and install smoke alarms in the elderly and other communities homes. We have a great rapport with the community and it is not uncommon to see the Volunteers at all school/community functions/galas/fundraisers with their fire engine for the children to all have a look at.
